A thin layer of fog develops above the ground at L'Ancresse Common, Guernsey, at sunset.

‘Mist’erious Weather at L’Ancresse

Ok, these images aren't going to win any awards but I wanted to share some with you as I've not seen something like this on Guernsey before... and besides, I get to use a shamefully cheesy title.

Driving towards L'Ancresse Common just as it was getting dark, I noticed a strange fog hanging low over the ground. I abandoned the car, grabbed the camera and hurried into this strange mist to capture some photos before darkness fell.

The fog only existed in patches above grass, and only on the southern-most end of the common. The curious thing about it was that it hung about 5 feet above the ground and was no more than 1 thick - below it, and above it was crystal clear. Walking normally, everything was foggy, but if I tip-toed, or bent down a little, I could see clearly into the distance. The base of the fog layer was so straight that it looked like it had been set with a ruler.

This golfer would have seen the flags fine, but he'd have had to drop to his knees to find his ball. The couple below, literally walking around with their heads in the clouds, had no idea where their dog was throughout the entire walk.

Darkness set in quickly and my camera, handheld with a long zoom lens, was struggling to make a well-exposed sharp picture.

The fog was beginning to rise higher and before long had disappeared entirely, leaving behind it a crystal-clear night.

With light levels so low, this was never going to be an exercise in stunning photography, but being such a bizarre and brief weather event, I couldn't resist walking out into it like an excited child and snapping as much as I could - it was gone as quickly as it arrived.
