When being introduced I’m often asked whether I’m a Wedding Photographer, a Portrait Photographer, a Corporate or Event Photographer. My answer is usually “Yes!” because I consider myself all of these, as well as product, commercial, landscape and any other word that goes before ‘Photographer’, ‘Videographer’ or ‘Filmmaker’.
Often there is an expectation that I should have a niche title and surprise that I don’t promote myself in just one area. The simplest reason for choosing to be ‘just’ a Photographer and Filmmaker, is that I enjoy all of these genres equally - it is the photographic process that I’m passionate about, regardless of the subject I am shooting.
Of course there is a business reason too: I don’t want to limit the scope of my work by labelling myself in such a way. While it’s clearly possible for a Wedding Photographer to find opportunities in other subjects, I have always been wary of type-casting myself. I offer a broad range of services in photography, videography and post-production and don’t want to be overlooked as a result of my chosen title.
Guernsey is a very limited market and most people own a camera - photographers are more ubiquitous than ever before and it is a tough arena in which to succeed - many work day-jobs and shoot in their spare time. There has never been a greater need for visual content, yet the rise of social media has in some ways devalued it, encouraging an attitude of ‘good enough’, knowing that within days that content will drop off the news-feed, never to be seen again. Much to my dismay, I must accept that for some, a photo shot with a smartphone is plenty ‘good enough’ for their purposes. More than ever, it seems essential that I cast my net wide and differentiate myself with quality and values that are difficult to achieve in-house.
So why should you hire me for your next photo or video shoot?
Firstly, for that exact reason - I provide a comprehensive photographic and video production service - I like to call it ‘Visual Media’. Many businesses and organisations need both stills and video from time-to-time and to have someone who can provide both, with a complimentary style that aligns with your brand, is highly valuable.
Depending on your business, you might need an event videographer on one day, then product photography and corporate headshots the next. You may need scenic, property or portrait work for editorial publication or advertising. To be able to call on one person who can provide all this and more and who knows your business, is one less headache for you.
Lastly, I eat, sleep and breath photography and filmmaking and I am available 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. I put the same amount of passion, effort and attention into all of my work, all of the time. Whether it’s stills or video, I always strive to tell a story in my work - your story.
So am I a Photographer or Filmmaker? Yes. Do I do weddings, portraits, corporate, event, commercial, product or landscape photography? Yes I do! Please get in touch if you would like to start discussing your next creative project with me.
